<div3 type="SECTION" n="2" org="uniform" sample="complete"><p> <lemma lang="greek" targOrder="U" from="ROOT" to="DITTO">καὶ μιᾷ γε πόλει κ.τ.λ. καὶ</lemma> is corrective, ‘and indeed . . .,’ ‘nay.’ The statement should perhaps be taken relatively, <hi rend="ITALIC">i e.</hi> most slaves in proportion to the population. Grote refers to Athenaeus vi. 265, where Theopompus (circ. 333 B.C.) is quoted as saying <foreign lang="greek">Χῖοι πρῶτοι τῶν Ἑλλήνων μετὰ Θετταλοὺς καὶ Λακεδαιμονίους ἐχρήσαντο δούλοις</foreign>, with the difference that <foreign lang="greek">Χῖοι βαρβάρους κέκτηνται τοὺς οἰκέτας καὶ τιμὴν αὐτῶν καταβάλλοντες</foreign>.</p><p>

<lemma lang="greek" targOrder="U" from="ROOT" to="DITTO">χαλεπωτέρως κολαζόμενοι</lemma> ‘being punished more severely.’ Cf. <bibl n="Thuc. 3. 46" default="NO" valid="yes">iii. 46</bibl>, <foreign lang="greek">χαλεπῶς τιμωρεῖσθαι. χαλεπώτερον</foreign> would suggest ‘with more difficulty.’

The two genitives absolute give two reasons of a slightly different nature for his immediate assistance, (1) the opportunity: Delphinium is only being fortified and is yet incomplete, so that it can be taken; (2) the danger: a wall of greater proportions is being still farther built round, after the completion of which it will be almost impossible to take the place. <pb n="189" /></p><p>
