                    <p><label>OSTIA´RIUM</label> one form of <foreign lang="la">Tributum,
                            Capitis</foreign> [see <ref target="vectigalia-cn" targOrder="U">VECTIGALIA</ref>]. A tax imposed in Cilicia, Syria, and perhaps some
                        other provinces, upon doorways, whose number was probably regarded as a sign
                        of the value of the property. (Compare the English window-tax.) Nothing is
                        known of the amount. The word <foreign lang="la">ostiarium</foreign> is
                        found in Caesar, <title>B.C.</title> 3, 32. <bibl n="Cic. Fam. 3.8" default="NO" valid="yes">Cic.
                            Fam. 3.8</bibl>, <bibl n="Cic. Fam. 3.5" default="NO" valid="yes">5</bibl>, speaks of <foreign lang="la">exactio ostiorum.</foreign></p>
