Transl. ‘Them. was in fact one who showed most convincingly natural powers, and he was beyond all others worthy of the very highest admiration in this respect.’ <foreign lang="greek">ἐς αὐτό</foreign> refers to <foreign lang="greek">φύσεως ἰσχύν</foreign>: <foreign lang="greek">διαφερόντως τι</foreign> belongs to <foreign lang="greek">θαυμάσαι</foreign>: for <foreign lang="greek">μᾶλλον ἑτέρου</foreign> cf. c. <bibl n="Thuc. 1.84.2" default="NO" valid="yes">84. 2</bibl> <foreign lang="greek">ἧσσον ἑτέρων</foreign>. </p>

<milestone unit="note" id="n.1.138.3.5" n="5" /><p>19. <lemma lang="greek" targOrder="U" from="ROOT" to="DITTO">ἐπὶ πλεῖστον τοῦ γενησομένου</lemma>—those edd. who connect these words understand <gloss>to the remotest future,</gloss> so that <lemma lang="greek" targOrder="U" from="ROOT" to="DITTO">ἐπὶ</lemma> <foreign lang="greek"> πλεῖστον</foreign> refers to <hi rend="italic">time</hi>: the objection lies in the <hi rend="italic">sing.</hi> <foreign lang="greek">τοῦ γενησομένου</foreign> after the <hi rend="italic">plur.</hi> <foreign lang="greek">μελλόντων</foreign>, and so some think it spurious, others join <foreign lang="greek">τοῦ γενησομένου</foreign> to <foreign lang="greek">τῶν μελλόντων</foreign>, which is very forced. But all difficulty disappears if we understand by <foreign lang="greek">τὸ γενησόμενον</foreign> <gloss>the particular event that was going to happen</gloss> and take <foreign lang="greek">ἐπὶ πλεῖστον</foreign> of extent, as in <foreign lang="greek">ἐπὶ πλεῖστον ἀνθρώπων</foreign> in c. <bibl n="Thuc. 1.1.2" default="NO" valid="yes">1. 2</bibl>, so that the whole phrase emphasises only the extraordinary accuracy of his <foreign lang="greek">εἰκασία</foreign>: ‘his forecasts of the future were the best, in every event proving more accurate than those of others.’ <foreign lang="greek">ἐπὶ π. τοῦ γεν</foreign>. is lit. <gloss>so as to cover the greatest part (i.e. a greater part than any one else) of just that which was coming.</gloss></p>

Plat. <title>Alc.</title> i. p. 123 B ‘he said (the person meant is perhaps Xenophon) he passed a district which the inhabitants called <foreign lang="greek">ζωνὴν τῆς βασιλέως γυναικός</foreign>: and another called “the mirror” ... <foreign lang="greek">καὶ ὀνόματ᾽ ἔχειν ἑκάστους τῶν τόπων ἀπὸ ἑκάστου τῶν κόσμων</foreign>.’ Lampsacns and Myus belonged to the Delian League, so Them. cannot have actually enjoyed their revenues. </p>

<milestone unit="note" id="n.1.138.6.2" n="2" /><p>21 <lemma lang="greek" targOrder="U" from="ROOT" to="DITTO">προύλεγον ... μή</lemma>—in the terms of an ultimatum it is not surprising to see <foreign lang="greek">μή</foreign> where <foreign lang="greek">οὐ</foreign> would be ordinarily used: <foreign lang="greek">προλέγω</foreign> contains a meaning of <hi rend="italic">advice</hi> or <hi rend="italic">warning.</hi> For the Megarian decree and Aegina see c. <bibl n="Thuc. 1.67" default="NO" valid="yes">67</bibl>.  </p>
