My carriage had become entangled in the baggage train, and was some <measure n="2miles" type="distance">two miles</measure> in the rear.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10828" />I began the tour of <placeName reg="Centreville, Fairfax, Virginia" key="tgn,2111026" authname="tgn,2111026">Centreville</placeName> in search of food, as I had had no breakfast, and was nearly famished.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10829" />While swallowing a cup of very poor coffee, which I persuaded the servants of a deserted mansion to sell me, I heard the sound of cannon in the direction of <placeName key="tgn,2112877" n="1.000 541" reg="manassas, manassas, virginia" authname="tgn,2112877">Manassas</placeName>.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10830" />I immediately pushed forward on foot, under a blazing sun, and after a brisk walk of <measure n="3miles" type="distance">three miles</measure>, during which the only refreshment I could procure was a little vinegar and water, I came to a wood through which the road leads over a high rise of ground, with an oat-field on the right, and on the left a meadow, in which is placed a small house, with an adjoining shed.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10831" />In the oat field, on the right, were stationed <num value="2">two</num> of the <name>Parrott</name> guns, under <persName n="Benjamin,Lieutenant,,,," id="n0072.0114.00345.04923" reg="mostcommon:Benjamin,Judah,P.,,:1" authname="benjamin,judah,p."><roleName n="Lieutenant" full="yes">Lieut.</roleName> <surname full="yes">Benjamin</surname></persName>.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10832" />As you pass the crest of the hill, your eye falls upon a gentle slope of meadow on the left of the road, bordered on the lower side by a thick growth of low trees, and rising, after passing a ravine, to high ground on the other side.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10833" />At the right of the wood was an open plain, with a house and barn some <num value="15">fifteen</num> or <num value="20">twenty</num> rods from the wood.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10834" />As I approached the <num value="1" type="ordinal">first</num> hill, I saw <orgName n="battery"><persName n="Sherman,,,,," id="n0072.0114.00345.04924" reg="mostcommon:Sherman,William,T.,,:3" authname="sherman,william,t."><surname full="yes">Sherman</surname></persName>'s battery</orgName> drawn up on the left, behind the crest, and the <orgName type="regiment" key="1MARegiment">First Massachusetts regiment</orgName>, in line of battle, some <num value="20">twenty</num> paces behind, in a hollow, to be out of reach of the rebel batteries.</p>
<p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10835" />At about <time value="1oclock">1 o'clock</time>, as the head of our column rose over the crest of the hill, it was saluted by a shot from the rebel battery quite across the ravine, which fired <num value="8">eight</num> or <num value="10">ten</num> rounds from <num value="2">two</num> guns, and was briskly answered by <persName n="Ayres,Captain,,,," id="n0072.0114.00345.04925" reg="mostcommon:Ayres,R.,B.,,:1" authname="ayres,r.,b."><roleName n="Captain" full="yes">Capt.</roleName> <surname full="yes">Ayres</surname></persName>.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10836" />After about <measure n="10minutes" type="date">ten minutes</measure>, their firing ceased, and it was supposed that the rebels had retreated.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10837" />They had fired no rifled cannon, and it was believed they had none.</p>
<p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10838" />Skirmishers were at once thrown out from the whole brigade, which was commanded by <persName n="Richardson,Colonel,,,," id="n0072.0114.00345.04926" reg="nearbymention:Richardson,J.,B.,," authname="richardson,j.,b."><roleName n="Colonel" full="yes">Col.</roleName> <surname full="yes">Richardson</surname></persName>, and consisted of <num value="5">five</num> regiments, into the woods on the left, while the <orgName type="regiment" key="MA1">First Massachusetts</orgName> was drawn up in line of battle immediately in front of the woods, and the <orgName type="regiment" key="NY12">Twelfth New York</orgName>, <persName n="Walrath,Colonel,,,," id="n0072.0114.00345.04927" reg="mostcommon:Walrath,nomatch:0" authname="walrath"><roleName n="Colonel" full="yes">Col.</roleName> <surname full="yes">Walrath</surname></persName>, just at their right.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10839" />The <num value="2" type="ordinal">Second</num> and <orgName type="regiment" key="3MIRegiment">Third Michigan regiments</orgName> were sent to the extreme right, and marched in a right line from the road, towards the wood, and drew up in line of battle.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10840" />The skirmishers pushed into the wood, and were permitted to penetrate to some distance without being fired on. Soon a few scattering shots were fired at them, and then the <orgName type="regiment" key="1MARegiment">First Massachusetts regiment</orgName> and the <orgName type="regiment" key="NY12">Twelfth New York</orgName> were pushed in together.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10841" />I had gone into the field bordering the wood, about <num value="1">one</num>-<num value="3" type="ordinal">third</num> of the way to the wood, and watched them enter.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10842" />They had been gone perhaps <num value="5">five</num> or <measure n="10minutes" type="date">ten minutes</measure>, when a full, round volley was fired directly in their faces from a breastwork in the ravine, behind which the whole rebel force had been drawn up. They could not see their assailants, they scarcely fired a single shot at them, but were shattered by the deadly fire thus suddenly opened upon them.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10843" />At intervals of perhaps a minute this volley was repeated <num value="5">five</num> or <num value="6">six</num> times — the rebels accompanying each fire with tremendous shouts.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10844" /><num value="2">Two</num> howitzers, belonging to <orgName n="battery"><persName n="Sherman,,,,," id="n0072.0114.00345.04928" reg="mostcommon:Sherman,William,T.,,:3" authname="sherman,william,t."><surname full="yes">Sherman</surname></persName>'s battery</orgName>, were sent past me through the field into the wood, and opened fire, which was returned by the same volleys.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10845" />After a few minutes, a rebel battery of cannon, planted upon a small cleared space in the woods, which I could see very distinctly with my glass, opened fire, <num value="1" type="ordinal">first</num> upon the howitzers in their vicinity, but after <num value="2">two</num> or <num value="3">three</num> shots, they sent half-a-dozen balls into the field where I stood, and over my head into the group of officers and soldiers gathered about the house to watch the firing.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10846" /><num value="1">One</num> shot struck some <measure n="20feet" type="distance">20 feet</measure> from me, another went through the shanty adjoining the house, and a shell exploded in the field some <num value="20">20</num> rods from where I stood, without doing any damage.</p>
<p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10847" />At <time value="2:30">2 1/2 o'clock</time>, a company of cavalry, <orgName type="mil" key="TXRangers">Texas Rangers</orgName>, belonging to the regular force, had crossed the field and taken possession, the men dismounting, armed with carbines, immediately in front of the wood.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10848" />While stationed on the hill during the <num value="1" type="ordinal">first</num> firing, <num value="1">one</num> of the rebel shots had fallen in their midst and severely <measure n="1" type="wounded">wounded one</measure> of them, who had been carried back into the wood.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10849" />After the firing from cannon and musketry which I have mentioned had been continued some <measure n="20minutes" type="date">twenty minutes</measure>,--many of the musket shots reaching the point where I stood,--I saw the <orgName type="regiment" key="12NYRegiment">Twelfth New York regiment</orgName> rush pell-mell out of the wood, followed by the <rs>Massachusetts</rs> men, marching in good order.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10850" />Their appearance was the signal for a general retreat of the forces in that neighborhood.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10851" />The regular cavalry wheeled and ran their horses up the hill at the top of their speed — putting those of us who were on the hill-side in greater peril of life and limb than we had been before during the day. <num value="2">Two</num> companies of the New York <num value="12" type="ordinal">Twelfth</num> kept their ground well, and came off in good order.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10852" />The rest made good time in leaving a position which it could not be expected for a moment that they could hold, The <placeName key="tgn,7007520" n="1.000 13" reg="michigan" authname="tgn,7007520">Michigan</placeName> regiments, on the right, kept their position for a time, but soon drew off with the rest.</p>
<p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10853" />It was clear that the rebels were intrenched in great force in the wood, and that they had a powerful battery there, some of the guns being clearly rifled cannon from the noise the balls made as they passed over our heads.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10854" />Clouds of dust, coming towards the front from the hills in the rear, indicated that they were bringing up reinforcements.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10855" />The withdrawal of our troops was in pursuance of a purpose to change the plan of attack.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10856" />Orders were sent back for reinforcements.
