<milestone unit="sentence" n="11411" />The killed and wounded in this engagement cannot even yet be accurately ascertained.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="11412" />Indeed, my command has been so overworked, that it has had but little time to ascertain anything.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="11413" />The killed, as reported, are <num value="103">one hundred and three</num>, and among them we have to deplore the loss of the brave <persName n="Murray,Colonel,,,," id="n0087.0106.00330.06533" reg="mostcommon:Murray,A.,,,:3" authname="murray,a."><roleName n="Colonel" full="yes">Col.</roleName> <surname full="yes">Murray</surname></persName>, of the <orgName type="regiment" key="84PAVolunteer">Eighty-fourth Pennsylvania Volunteers</orgName>, who fell at the head of his regiment while gallantly leading it in the face of the enemy.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="11415" />The enemy's loss is more difficult to ascertain than our own. <num value="270">Two hundred and seventy</num> were found dead on the battle-field.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="11427" />I cannot conclude this report without expressing thanks and gratitude to officers and soldiers of my command, for their valuable conduct on this trying day. It was worthy of the great country whose national existence they have pledged their lives to preserve.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="11428" />Special thanks are due to <persName n="Kimball,Colonel,,,," id="n0087.0106.00330.06540" reg="nearbymention:Kimball,Nathan,,," authname="kimball,nathan"><roleName n="Colonel" full="yes">Col.</roleName> <surname full="yes">Kimball</surname></persName>, commanding <orgName type="regiment" key="1Brigade">First brigade</orgName>, and senior officer in the field.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="11430" />He executed my orders, in every instance with vigor and fidelity, and exhibited wisdom and sagacity in the various movements that were necessarily entrusted to his direction.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="11433" />This brigade, and the regiments accompanying it, achieved the decisive success of the day. They drove the forces of the enemy before them on the left flank, and by hurling this flank back upon the reserve, consummated this glorious action.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="11434" />High praise is due to <persName n="Sullivan,Colonel,,,," id="n0087.0106.00330.06542" reg="mostcommon:Sullivan,James,,,:2" authname="sullivan,james"><roleName n="Colonel" full="yes">Col.</roleName> <surname full="yes">Sullivan</surname></persName>, commanding <orgName type="regiment" key="2Brigade">Second brigade</orgName>, for the manner in which he contributed to the <num value="1" type="ordinal">first</num> repulse of the enemy in the morning.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="11436" />This skilful management prevented the enemy doubtless from using effectually his formidable artillery.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="11437" />The cavalry performed its duty with spirit in this engagement, and, with its gallant officers, exhibited activity which paralyzed the movements of the enemy.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="11438" />The commanders of regiments are also entitled to especial mention, but sufficient justice cannot be done them in this report.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="11439" />I must, therefore, refer you on this head to the report of the brigade commanders.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="11440" />The officers of my staff have my thanks for the fidelity with which they discharged the trying duties that devolved upon them.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="11441" />They had to penetrate the thickest of the fight to bring me intelligence of the state of the field, and performed their perilous duty throughout the day with cheerful alacrity.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="11442" />It affords me pleasure, as it is my duty, to recommend all the officers whose names I have specially mentioned to the consideration of the <rs>Government</rs>.</p>
