<milestone unit="sentence" n="4019" />All the time the naval battle continued, and, despite the heavy odds, our little fleet of <num value="7">seven</num> gunboats could not be silenced, and continued the fight as actively as in the morning.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="4020" />At <time value="2:15">fifteen minutes past two</time> the <rs>Curlew</rs> received a shot which soon after sunk her. She was run up to the opposite shore and her ammunition taken off by the <rs>Fanny</rs>, which boat immediately returned into the fight.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="4021" />At <time value="4oclock">four o'clock</time> a small steamer was run ashore below the <orgName n="Pork Point Battery" type="battery">Pork Point battery</orgName>, and the landing of troops begun.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="4022" />Only <num value="1">one</num> gun in <placeName reg="Fort Bartow">Fort Bartow</placeName> could bear upon the point, and it was kept engaged by a gunboat which ranged itself alongside about a mile distant.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="4024" />Our boats fired until the course of the shell could be traced through the air and its explosion marked by a fierce red flash At <time value="5:45">forty-five minutes past five</time>, the firing ceased, owing to the darkness, and soon after, our fleet retired.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="4027" />Collecting his forces, <persName n="Anderson,Colonel,,,," id="n0087.0032.00114.02257" reg="nearbymention:Anderson,Frank,,," authname="anderson,frank"><roleName n="Colonel" full="yes">Col.</roleName> <surname full="yes">Anderson</surname></persName> marched down the island some <num value="5">five</num> or <measure n="6miles" type="distance">six miles</measure>, and bivouacked near the barricade constructed across the island at the marshes.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="4028" />In going down he passed under the fire of the ships, but the men marched through it with the greatest coolness and determination.</p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="4029" />The guns in <placeName reg="Fort Bartow">Fort Bartow</placeName> were very skilfully used, and (lid good service throughout the day. The battery was manned by <num value="2">two</num> companies of the <orgName type="regiment" key="NC17">Seventeenth North-Carolina</orgName>, under <persName n="Hill,Major,,,," id="n0087.0032.00114.02258" reg="nearbymention:Hill,G.,H.,," authname="hill,g.,h."><roleName n="Major" full="yes">Major</roleName> <surname full="yes">Hill</surname></persName>, the <quote><orgName n="State Guards" type="guards">State guards</orgName>,</quote> and the <quote><persName n="Harvey,,John,,," id="n0087.0032.00114.02259" reg="default:Harvey,John,,," authname="harvey,john"><foreName full="yes">John</foreName> <surname full="yes">Harvey</surname></persName> guards,</quote> but only the former company was brought into immediate action, as the guns were ranged rather too much up the channel.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="4030" />Only <num value="3">three</num> guns could be used during the fight, a rifle and a howitzer, <hi rend="italics">en barbette</hi>, and <num value="1">one</num> embrasure gun. These <num value="3">three</num>, however, were so well manned that no <num value="1">one</num> of the hostile ships passed up far enough to come within range of the <num value="2" type="ordinal">second</num> embrasure gun. The men fought with great coolness and intrepidity, and showed conclusively what they could do under experienced and skilful officers.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="4031" />From the time the battle commenced until darkness put a stop to the scene, the enemy threw over <num value="3000">three thousand</num> shot and shell, and used every conceivable kind of projectile.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="4032" />Still the battery was but little injured, and the casualties only amounted to <num value="1">one</num> man killed and <measure n="3" type="wounded">three wounded</measure>. It seems almost a miracle that no more damage was done; for hour after hour the ponderous shell were thrown into it, sending up huge jets of sand and stone from the outer angles and from the turf and sand revetments of the embrasures.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="4033" />None of the guns were injured to any extent; and when the sun rose on the ensuing morning the fort was in as good repair for defence as on the <num value="1" type="ordinal">first</num> day.</p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="4034" />Immediately back of the fort were the quarters of the <orgName type="regiment" key="NC17">Seventeenth North-Carolina</orgName>.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="4035" />These were set on fire early in the action by the explosion of a shell, and long after dark they were still burning, the lurid flames lighting up the sky, the light flashing for miles across the flickering waves.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="4036" />When morning dawned there was but a mass of smouldering embers.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="4037" />In these huts was the baggage of the regiment, and about <num value="200">two hundred</num> stand of arms; all of which was destroyed.
