<milestone unit="sentence" n="10876" />We made a brief halt at <measure n="12Mile" type="distance">Twelve-Mile</measure> Ordinary.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10877" />After leaving this point, our route lay through dense forests of pine and dreary patches of cleared but uncultivated land.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10878" />As night and the column advanced, the darkness became terrible, the wind fairly roared through the tall trees, and the rain, so long threatening, fell in torrents.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10879" />We had <num value="2">two</num> trusty white guides, but you may imagine how serviceable they were, when we could not distinguish a horseman at the distance of <measure n="3yards" type="distance">three yards</measure>, unless, perhaps, he was mounted on a white steed.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10880" />Still, the regiment moved forward for many miles, keeping closed files, and carefully following the sound of clanking sabres; until, finally, the road, which before had seemed to be in a highly tangled condition, formed a knot like the <name>Gordian</name> puzzle.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10881" />Here, apparently, fate had a choice bivouac in store for us — but not so <persName n="West,Colonel,,,," id="n0093.0028.00288.05182" reg="nearbymention:West,R.,M.,," authname="west,r.,m."><roleName n="Colonel" full="yes">Colonel</roleName> <surname full="yes">West</surname></persName>.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10882" />The guides lit matches, which blazed for a moment, (just long enough to exhibit our forlorn prospects,) and were then quenched by the rain.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10883" />Still, we were making a few yards, or rather <quote>taking ground to the right.</quote>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10884" />The guide covered his hands with the phosphorus of the matches, and held them up. This did not remind <num value="1">one</num> forcibly of a revolving coast-light, but we persevered.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10885" />Many of the men lost their way through the woods, <num value="2">two</num> or <num value="3">three</num> officers were missing, but fortunately all regained the column.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10886" />We pushed on in this manner until about <time value="3oclock">three o'clock</time>, when it being perfectly impossible to proceed another foot, on account of the blackness of all surrounding objects, and the awful condition of the road, (when we found it,) we were compelled to sit patiently in our saddles until daylight, drenched to the skin, and ruminating upon the beautiful moral relation which the soldier sustains toward a grateful country.</p>
<p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10887" />At daylight we moved on rapidly, and made up for lost time.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10888" />We came up with the infantry, and halted a mile this side of the <placeName reg="Oldhouse Landing, Charles City, Virginia" key="tgn,2558227" authname="tgn,2558227">Chickahominy River</placeName>.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10889" />They had surprised and captured a small rebel picket.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10890" />We soon came in sight of the river at <placeName reg="Fords Crossing, Merrimack, New Hampshire" key="tgn,2334096" authname="tgn,2334096">Ford's Crossing</placeName>, and away we went on the gallop.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10891" />The <num value="1" type="ordinal">first</num> rebel picket was discovered on the west bank of the river.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10892" />They were in a tranquil state of existence, having divested themselves of their superfluous clothing, and <quote>lain down to quiet dreams.</quote>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10893" />They were sound asleep.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10895" />After fording the river, which is quite narrow at this place, and the water about up to our saddlebags, we swept onward with drawn sabres, at a light gallop, capturing without resistance <num value="4">four</num> pickets, and keeping a bright lookout in all directions.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="10896" />As we mounted a hill in view of <placeName reg="Charles City Court-House">Charles City Court-House</placeName>, we caught a sight of the rebel camp, and with a loud cheer we commenced the charge.
