<milestone unit="sentence" n="13094" />In the midst of the din I heard an artillery officer shouting to his cannoneers to stand by him and plant the guns in a proper position for enfilading the lane.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13102" />It is hoped, therefore, that the following short <quote>rectification</quote> may find a place in your columns.</p>
<p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13103" />The <num value="1" type="ordinal">first</num> statement of <quote>Historicus</quote> to which I give my attention is the indirect assertion that the arrival of the <orgName type="division" n="division 3">Third division</orgName> of the <orgName type="corps" n="corps 3">Third corps</orgName>, about <time value="4oclock">four o'clock</time> in the afternoon, on the field, put an end to the conflict on the <dateStruct value="-07-1" full="yes" authname="--07-01"><day reg="1" full="yes">first</day> of <month reg="07" full="yes">July</month></dateStruct>, and relieved the <orgName type="corps" n="corps 1">First</orgName> and <orgName type="corps" n="corps 11">Eleventh corps</orgName> from imminent peril.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13105" />I may remark here that <quote>Historicus</quote> studiously avoids mentioning <persName n="Hancock,General,,,," id="n0093.0063.00350.06194" reg="mostcommon:Hancock,nomatch:0" authname="hancock"><roleName n="General" full="yes">General</roleName> <surname full="yes">Hancock</surname></persName>'s name in his account of the operations of <dateStruct value="-07-1" full="yes" authname="--07-01"><month reg="07" full="yes">July</month> <day reg="1" full="yes">first</day></dateStruct>--a very strange mistake for an <quote>eye-witness.</quote>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13106" />When <persName n="Sickles,General,,,," id="n0093.0063.00350.06195" reg="mostcommon:Sickles,nomatch:0" authname="sickles"><roleName n="General" full="yes">General</roleName> <surname full="yes">Sickles</surname></persName> arrived at <placeName key="tgn,2089321" n="1.000 5" reg="hillsdale, indiana, pennsylvania" authname="tgn,2089321">Gettysburgh</placeName>, <persName n="Howard,General,,,," id="n0093.0063.00350.06196" reg="mostcommon:Howard,Samuel,,,:2" authname="howard,samuel"><roleName n="General" full="yes">General</roleName> <surname full="yes">Howard</surname></persName> was not the <rs type="role" reg="commanding-Officer">commanding officer</rs>, and had not been for some time.

<p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13109" />The next statement which I notice is, that a conference of <quote>leading generals</quote> took place, when some insisted on falling back on <placeName key="tgn,2048910" n="1.000 4" reg="taneytown, carroll, maryland" authname="tgn,2048910">Taneytown</placeName>, etc. It would be interesting to know, who the <quote>leading generals</quote> referred to, were.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13110" />It is said, indeed, that <persName n="Howard,General,,,," id="n0093.0063.00350.06200" reg="mostcommon:Howard,Samuel,,,:2" authname="howard,samuel"><roleName n="General" full="yes">General</roleName> <surname full="yes">Howard</surname></persName>, who enjoys in the estimation of the public — I will not say how justly — the honors of the day, had decided to retreat from Gettyburgh.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13111" />But it is certainly true, that the leading general, <persName n="Hancock,Major-General,,,," id="n0093.0063.00350.06201" reg="mostcommon:Hancock,nomatch:0" authname="hancock"><roleName n="Major-General" full="yes">Major-General</roleName> <surname full="yes">Hancock</surname></persName>, entertained no such proposition, after he assumed command, and long before the arrival of <persName n="Sickles,General,,,," id="n0093.0063.00350.06202" reg="mostcommon:Sickles,nomatch:0" authname="sickles"><roleName n="General" full="yes">General</roleName> <surname full="yes">Sickles</surname></persName>, had selected the lines of battle, on which the troops were established as they came up. The left of that line was <placeName reg="Roundtop Hill, Washington, Maryland" key="tgn,2631781" authname="tgn,2631781">Roundtop Hill</placeName>, and its general direction was that of the ridge connecting Roundtop, Cemetery, and <placeName reg="Culp's Hills">Culp's Hills</placeName>, and was held by the <orgName type="corps" n="corps 2">Second</orgName> and <orgName type="corps" n="corps 3">Third corps</orgName>.</p>
<p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13112" /><quote>Historicus</quote> now endeavors to create the impression that the ridge or elevated ground connecting the left of the <orgName type="corps" n="corps 2">Second corps</orgName> was far to his front.</p>
<p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13113" />I assert that <persName n="Sickles,General,,,," id="n0093.0063.00350.06203" reg="mostcommon:Sickles,nomatch:0" authname="sickles"><roleName n="General" full="yes">General</roleName> <surname full="yes">Sickles</surname></persName> moved from the ridge described by <quote>Historicus,</quote> and precipitated the battle on most unfortunate ground.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13114" />It hardly seems possible that <num value="1">one</num> who has ever seen the ground can gainsay this.</p>
<p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13115" />When <persName n="Sickles,General,,,," id="n0093.0063.00350.06204" reg="mostcommon:Sickles,nomatch:0" authname="sickles"><roleName n="General" full="yes">General</roleName> <surname full="yes">Sickles</surname></persName> moved forward his corps, on the afternoon of the <dateStruct value="-07-2" full="yes" authname="--07-02"><day reg="2" full="yes">second</day> of <month reg="07" full="yes">July</month></dateStruct>, from its appropriate place in the general line, he excited the astonishment of the <num value="1000">thousands</num> of lookers on. It was a magnificent sight, but excited the gravest apprehension, and the writer well recollects the remarks made at the time by some prominent officers.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13116" />The right of his line was entirely disconnected from the <orgName type="corps" n="corps 2">Second corps</orgName>, leaving an interval of from <num value="0.5">one half</num> to <num value="1">one</num> quarter of a mile.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13117" /><persName n="Gibbon,General,,,," id="n0093.0063.00350.06205" reg="mostcommon:Gibbon,nomatch:0" authname="gibbon"><roleName n="General" full="yes">General</roleName> <surname full="yes">Gibbon</surname></persName>, commanding the <orgName type="corps" n="corps 2">Second corps</orgName>, at this moment threw forward into this interval <num value="2">two</num> regiments of infantry and a battery, which were nearly destroyed when the shock fell on <orgName n="corps"><persName n="Sickles,,,,," id="n0093.0063.00350.06206" reg="mostcommon:Sickles,nomatch:0" authname="sickles"><surname full="yes">Sickles</surname></persName>'s corps</orgName>.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13118" />A like interval was left between the right of the <orgName type="corps" n="corps 5">Fifth corps</orgName>.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13119" />and the left of the <num value="3" type="ordinal">Third</num>.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13120" />In this position, with no connection on his right or left, <persName n="Sickles,General,,,," id="n0093.0063.00350.06207" reg="mostcommon:Sickles,nomatch:0" authname="sickles"><roleName n="General" full="yes">General</roleName> <surname full="yes">Sickles</surname></persName> became engaged.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13121" />Had the <orgName type="corps" n="corps 2">Second</orgName> and <orgName type="corps" n="corps 5">Fifth corps</orgName> been moved up to conform to this line, the battle would have been delivered in front of the strong features of the ground, and could hardly have helped being disastrous.</p>
<p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13122" />Through the intervals above described the enemy penetrated with determination, pressing on until they were checked nearly on the original line — on the <num value="1">one</num> flank by the <orgName type="corps" n="corps 5">Fifth corps</orgName> and on the other by the <num value="2" type="ordinal">Second</num>.
