<milestone unit="sentence" n="12353" />Bearing to the right and following the old wood-road, the brigade soon reached an apparently impassable bayou, but a crossing was at last effected, and the route pursued for several miles.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="12354" />Small squads of the enemy's cavalry hovered in our advance, and several were captured.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="12355" />About <time value="2oclock">two o'clock</time> the column was ordered to return to the landing, where it arrived just before dark, and bivouacked for the night.</p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="12356" />Hardly had the camp fires been lighted, when orders were received to move immediately by another route and by a night-march to our original destination.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="12357" />Over marshy ground, thickly covered with wood, without a guide and with the only direction, <quote>to take a north-westerly course,</quote> we set out. Fortunately, the <orgName n="North Star" type="newspaper">North Star</orgName> was in full view, and by its aid we were enabled to reach the point indicated, after a fatiguing march of more than <measure n="8hours" type="date">eight hours</measure>. It was after <time value="2oclock">two o'clock</time> in the morning when we reached the deserted camps of the enemy.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="12358" />At daybreak <persName n="Steele,General,,,," id="n0096.0110.00366.07342" reg="nearbymention:Steele,F.,,," authname="steele,f."><roleName n="General" full="yes">Gen.</roleName> <surname full="yes">Steele</surname></persName> and staff came up, and ordered the brigade to form parallel with the bayou on which its right then rested, move toward the river, and complete the investment of the enemy's works.</p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="12359" />Having moved scarcely more than half a mile, we met the enemy in force, their works being in full view.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="12360" />The brigade halted, and skirmishers from the <orgName type="regiment" key="MO17">Seventeenth Missouri</orgName> were sent forward to feel the enemy.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="12361" />They soon became hotly engaged, and the <orgName type="regiment" key="3MOInfantry">Third Missouri infantry</orgName> were ordered forward to their support.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="12363" />The enemy having now been unmasked and their position partially at least ascertained, a halt was ordered and nothing further was done until the final dispositions for reducing the <rs>Fort</rs> were made.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="12364" />I had forgotten to state that the <orgName type="regiment" key="MO12">Twelfth Missouri</orgName> was left behind at the landing as a guard for the transports, and that <orgName n="battery"><persName n="Landgrasber,Captain,,,," id="n0096.0110.00366.07344" reg="mostcommon:Landgrasber,nomatch:0" authname="landgrasber"><roleName n="Captain" full="yes">Captain</roleName> <surname full="yes">Landgrasber</surname></persName>'s battery</orgName> finding it impossible to follow the brigade in its night-march through the woods and swamps, was also left behind.</p>
