Some who had engaged in that <num value="1" type="ordinal">first</num> conflict had gone home and had refused to reenlist; others had found soldiers' graves since then — but still others on both sides were here again, no longer the raw recruits that they were before, but, with their year of hard experience in the field, they were trained soldiers, equal to any in the world.</p>
