<milestone unit="sentence" n="3684" />This army, by forced marches, passed rapidly across the intervening mountainous country, subsisting to a great extent upon the roasting ears growing in the fields along their route, and on <dateStruct value="-08-30" full="yes" authname="--08-30"><month reg="08" full="yes">August</month> <day reg="30" full="yes">30</day></dateStruct> its advance brigades, about <num value="5000">5,000</num> strong, hungry and pugnacious, struck the <rs>Federal Army</rs>, under <persName n="Nelson,General,William,,," id="n0293.0058.00259.02460" reg="default:Nelson,William,,," authname="nelson,william"><roleName n="General" full="yes">General</roleName> <foreName full="yes">William</foreName> <surname full="yes">Nelson</surname></persName>, some <num value="16000">16,000</num> strong, at <placeName reg="Richmond, Madison, Kentucky" key="tgn,7014337" authname="tgn,7014337">Richmond, Ky.</placeName>, and destroyed it. It has been said that in no battle in the <rs>Civil War</rs> was an army so completely destroyed as <persName n="Nelson,,,,," id="n0293.0058.00259.02461" reg="nearbymention:Nelson,William,,," authname="nelson,william"><surname full="yes">Nelson</surname></persName>'s was in this fight.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="3685" />At the same time <persName n="Bragg,General,Braxton,,," id="n0293.0058.00259.02462" reg="default:Bragg,Braxton,,," authname="bragg,braxton"><roleName n="General" full="yes">General</roleName> <foreName full="yes">Braxton</foreName> <surname full="yes">Bragg</surname></persName> entered <placeName reg="Kentucky" key="tgn,7007255" authname="tgn,7007255">Kentucky</placeName> from another direction with a strong force and advanced upon <placeName key="tgn,7013915" n="1.000 7" reg="louisville, jefferson, kentucky" authname="tgn,7013915">Louisville</placeName>; and thus, for the <num value="1" type="ordinal">first</num> and only time during the war, nearly the whole of <placeName reg="Kentucky" key="tgn,7007255" authname="tgn,7007255">Kentucky</placeName> was within the <rs>Confederate</rs> lines.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="3686" />During the <measure n="6weeks" type="date">six weeks</measure> it was so situated, a number of Confederate regiments was recruited in the <rs>State</rs>.</p>

S. A., where, and in the adjoining counties, this regiment of <num value="410">410</num> men was recruited.

S. Cavalry</orgName>, and <persName n="Hollis,Colonel,,,," id="n0293.0058.00260.02482" reg="nearbymention:Hollis,William,,," authname="hollis,william"><roleName n="Colonel" full="yes">Colonel</roleName> <surname full="yes">Hollis</surname></persName> was killed.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="3699" />I do not know where <orgName type="company" n="Company I">Company I</orgName> was recruited, though probably it was in <placeName reg="Estill, Kentucky, United States" key="tgn,2000788" authname="tgn,2000788">Estill County</placeName>. <orgName type="company" n="Company K">Company K</orgName> was recruited in <placeName reg="Clinton, Hickman, Kentucky" key="tgn,2038224" authname="tgn,2038224">Clinton</placeName> and <placeName reg="Wayne Counties, Kentucky">Wayne Counties, Ky.</placeName>, while the regiment was <pb id="p.261" n="261" /> doing outpost duty in that section of the <rs>State</rs> early in <dateStruct value="1863--" full="yes" authname="1863"><year reg="1863" full="yes">1863</year></dateStruct>.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="3700" />After the accession of this company the regiment had a strength of more than <num value="900">900</num> men. Some of the companies were consolidated and their letter designations changed, while the regiment was in <placeName reg="Tennessee" key="tgn,7007825" authname="tgn,7007825">Tennessee</placeName>.</p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="3701" />That the <orgName type="regiment" key="11KYCav">11th Kentucky Cavalry</orgName> was intended for real use rather than for ornament is shown by the fact that on the very day that it was mustered into the service (<dateStruct value="1862-09-10" full="yes" authname="1862-09-10"><month reg="09" full="yes">September</month> <day reg="10" full="yes">10</day>, <year reg="1862" full="yes">1862</year></dateStruct>), orders were received from <persName n="Smith,General,Kirby,,," id="n0293.0058.00261.02485" reg="default:Smith,Kirby,,," authname="smith,kirby"><roleName n="General" full="yes">General</roleName> <foreName full="yes">Kirby</foreName> <surname full="yes">Smith</surname></persName>, then at <placeName reg="Lexington, Lexington, Virginia" key="tgn,7013889" authname="tgn,7013889">Lexington</placeName>, for <num value="1">one</num> of its companies to go on an expedition to <placeName reg="Irvine county">Irvine</placeName> and <placeName reg="Estill, Kentucky, United States" key="tgn,2000788" authname="tgn,2000788">Estill Counties</placeName> to find out whether there had been any movement of the <rs>Federal</rs> <persName n="Morgan,General,George,H.,," id="n0293.0058.00261.02486" reg="default:Morgan,George,H.,," authname="morgan,george,h."><roleName n="General" full="yes">General</roleName> <foreName full="yes">George</foreName> <foreName full="yes">H.</foreName> <surname full="yes">Morgan</surname></persName>'s forces from <placeName reg="Cumberland Gap, Claiborne, Tennessee" key="tgn,2098735" authname="tgn,2098735">Cumberland Gap</placeName>, in that direction; and to remain upon the scout until they had found out something definite about his movements, in whatever direction.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="3703" />On <dateStruct value="-09-15" full="yes" authname="--09-15"><month reg="09" full="yes">September</month> <day reg="15" full="yes">15</day></dateStruct> <dateStruct value="-09-4" full="yes" authname="--09-04"><day reg="4" full="yes">four</day></dateStruct> companies of the <num value="11" type="ordinal">11th</num> were sent into the <rs>Fox</rs> or Sugar Hill Country, in <placeName reg="Garrard, Kentucky, United States" key="tgn,2000791" authname="tgn,2000791">Garrard County</placeName>, to hunt up, disperse or capture a little army of <orgName n="Home Guard" type="militia">home guards</orgName> and bushwhackers under the command of a man named <persName n="King,,,,," id="n0293.0058.00261.02488" reg="mostcommon:King,Robert,D.,,:1" authname="king,robert,d."><surname full="yes">King</surname></persName>, who was giving a great deal of trouble in that direction.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="3704" />On the same day <persName n="Wheeler,Lieutenant,J.,L.,," id="n0293.0058.00261.02489" reg="expanded:Wheeler,James,Levi,," authname="wheeler,james,levi"><roleName n="Lieutenant" full="yes">Lieutenant</roleName> <foreName full="yes">J.</foreName> <foreName full="yes">L.</foreName> <surname full="yes">Wheeler</surname></persName> was assigned to the command of <placeName reg="Winchester, Winchester, Virginia" key="tgn,7017708" authname="tgn,7017708">Winchester</placeName> and <placeName reg="Clark, Wisconsin, United States" key="tgn,2002314" authname="tgn,2002314">Clark County</placeName> with his company (C) and directed to suppress all bushwhacking and break up all communications with the enemy, and to take away the arms of the <rs>Winchester</rs> <orgName n="Home Guard" type="militia">home guards</orgName> and parole the men.</p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="3705" />It was in such arduous and perilous work as scouting, fighting bushwhackers, etc., that the young regiment of raw recruits received its baptism of fire, as well as its <num value="1" type="ordinal">first</num> military training, before the men were even instructed in the manual of arms or the simplest rudiments of drill and the school of the soldier; and in such work it continued until the retreat from <placeName reg="Kentucky" key="tgn,7007255" authname="tgn,7007255">Kentucky</placeName>.</p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="3706" />Although assigned to <orgName n="Brigade"><persName n="Morgan,,,,," id="n0293.0058.00261.02490" reg="nearbymention:Morgan,John,H.,," authname="morgan,john,h."><surname full="yes">Morgan</surname></persName>'s Brigade</orgName>, the regiment as a whole, did not join him before the retreat, and did not go out of <placeName reg="Kentucky" key="tgn,7007255" authname="tgn,7007255">Kentucky</placeName> with him on the retreat.

The point where they surrendered was <q direct="unspecified">the farthest north</q> attained by any Confederate force marching directly from the <rs>South</rs> during the war.
