Subject Description: This wounded amazon, restored from copies, is one of four or five such statues made for the Temple of Artemis at Ephesos, in a contest between the leading sculptors of the time. The so-called 'Mattei' type is most expressive of pathos, as the Amazon expresses pain, which she tries to lessen by lifting her wounded left thigh to keep the weight off of it. She then supports herself on her spear--the pose that Lucian described as belonging to Pheidias' amazon.
