Christmas Eve in Rome.
--On Christmas Eve the Pope officiated in the Sistine Chapel, and administered the sacrament to about two hundred young French Zouaves.
After the ceremony he offered the soldiers a slight collation and fees.
It is the custom, on the day preceding Christmas, for the senior members of the Sacred College to address congratulations to the Holy Father; but on this occasion it was condolence which he offered, and the Pope replied in the following terms:

"I have just read in the Holy Gospel that a little child, only just born in a stable of Bethlehem, although still very feeble, caused trouble around him, and made King Herod tremble on his throne.
It was written of him that no one should be able to resist him, and that is why I, his servant, poor and weak old man, despoiled of everything, without help, alone and without support, still cause fear to my enemies, and are for them a strange embarrassment.
