Kieft, Wilhelm 1600-
Dutch governor; born in Holland, about 1600.
Little is known of him before his appearance at Manhattan on March 28, 1638.
He seems to have been an unpopular dweller at Rochelle, France, where his effigy had been hung upon a gallows.
De Vries, an active mariner, who knew him well, ranked him among the great rascals of his age. He was energetic, spiteful, and rapacious—the reverse of Van Twiller, his immediate predecessor.

Author; born in York, England, in 1585; became a Puritan in 1600; settled in Leyden.
Holland, and acted as agent for the Puritans in London till 1620.
He then went to New England, taking reinforcements to the Pilgrims in Plymouth.
He was the author of Mourt's relation of the beginning and proceeding of the English plantation settled at Plymouth in New England.
He died about 1628.

Pilgrim; born in England about 1600.
In 1623 the Pilgrims, regarding Robinson, in Holland, as their pastor, and expecting him over, had no other spiritual guide than Elder Brewster.
Because of this state of things at Plymouth, the London partners were taunted with fostering religious schism.
To relieve themselves of this stigma, they sent a minister named Lyford to be pastor.
He was kindly received, and, with John Oldham, who went to Plymouth at about the same time, w1600.

Military officer; born in Wijk, Holland, in 1600; received a fair education; arrived in New Netherland as an officer of the West India Company March 28, 1638; was made customs officer in 1639; had charge of the public stores of the company in 1643-48; then became a merchant and brewer.
He was made colonel of the burgher guard in 1649; was appointed mayor (burgomaster) of New Amsterdam in 1654; and held that office almost without interruption till 161600; received a fair education; arrived in New Netherland as an officer of the West India Company March 28, 1638; was made customs officer in 1639; had charge of the public stores of the company in 1643-48; then became a merchant and brewer.
He was made colonel of the burgher guard in 1649; was appointed mayor (burgomaster) of New Amsterdam in 1654; and held that office almost without interruption till 1664, when New Amsterdam was surrendered to the British.
He was then appointed by Governor Stuyvesant one of the commissioners to arrange a settlement with the British.
In 1663 he took a prominent part in settling the Connecticut boundary dispute, and in 1664 in settling the claims of Capt. John Scott to Long Island, and also held trusts under the English governors Nicholls, Lovelace, and Dongan.
He died in New York, April 4, 1684.
