under Major Willard, as the treasurers' books witness. His name, with his wife's, stands on a petition in favor of an old woman charged with being a witch; hence he can hardly have been of the extreme Puritan party, although a member of the church. 1-4John Whitmore was one of the early settlers in Medford, at least at the period when the records commence. In addition to this land, he owned the house shown on a preceding page, and also land in Billerica and Charlestown. He was in service, under Major Swayne, against th

Ibid., 555. But the people were not content to be a precinct. Accordingly at the session of the General Court, commencing May 8, 1678, a petition was presented for incorporation as a town:— To the honored Governor, Deputy Governor, together with the honored Magistrates and Deputies of the General Court, now sitting in Boston. The humble petition of us, the inhabitants of Cambridge Village, on the south side of Charles River, showeth, that the late war, as it hath been a great charge to the whole Colony, so to us in particular, both in our estates and persons, by loss of life to some, and others wounded and disa

Margaret Smith's Journal In the Province of Massachusetts Bay. 1678-9. Boston, May 8, 1678. I remember I did promise my kind Cousin Oliver (whom I pray God to have always ill his keeping), when I parted with him nigh unto three months ago, at mine Uncle Grindall's, that, on coming to this new country, I would, for his sake and perusal, keep a little journal of whatsoever did happen both unto myself and unto those with whom I might sojourn; as also, some account of the country and its marvels, and mine own cogitations thereon. So I this day make a beginning of the same; albeit, as my cousin well knoweth, not from any vanity of authorship, or because of any undue confiding in my poor ability to edify one justly held in repute among the learned, but because my heart tells me that what I write, be it ever so faulty, will be read by the partial eye of my kinsman, and not with the critical observance of the scholar, and that his love will not find it difficult to excuse what

I have said, was Rachel Eliot. She was a niece of the Apostle Eliot, and widow of John Poulter. When she died is not known, but he married Rebecca Cutler June 3, 1724. He died February 22, 1739, and his funeral sermon was preached by Parson Turell from Acts 21, 16th verse: There went with us also certain of the disciples of Cesarea and brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus, an old disciple, with whom we should lodge. The two oldest of the children of John Whitmore were twins, born May 8, 1678. Abigail married John Elder. As his name does not occur again in the history of Medford, they probably lived in another town. Francis, however, lived and died here, February 6, 1771, at the age of 93. His first wife was Anna Peirce, and they had seven children—six daughters and one son, who died when he was three years old. The following record is taken from Brook's History of Medford. Francis Whitmore m. Anna Peirce, December 7, 1699 and had Sarah, b. May 4, 1701. Hannah, b.
