reinstate Marshal-general, and Gookin probably went out of office. Green died 3 Mar. 1690-91, and two days afterwards Gookin was appointed Marshal-general,——equivalent to High Sheriff of the Colony. After the form of government was changed by the new charter, this office was abolished, and high Sheriffs were appointed in each county. Gookin held this office for a time in Suffolk, and was afterwards appointed, 1702, to the same office in Middlesex, which he held (except from Dec. 1715 to July 1717) until 27 July 1729. 4.
