The local issue having been decided at the Annual Meeting of the Massachusetts Society, the conflict with the Executive Committee remained to be met, and the call of the Board for the Quarterly Meeting on March 26, 1839, printed in the Liberator of March 15, made this Lib. 9.43. topic the principal motive for assembling, and urged the fullest possible representation of the State. The following letter bears date of March 19, 1839: W. L. Garrison to G. W. Benson, at Brooklyn. I am somewhat apprehensive that this hasty scrawl will not Ms. Boston. meet your eye as promptly as I could wish; for the time is close at hand for holding our State quarterly meeting, which is to decide whether our sacred enterprise shall continue under the management of its old and tried friends, or be given up to the control of politicians and sectarists. I hope you are at home, so that you may know promptly that it is the
