Hammond, Marcus Claudius Marcellus 1814-1876
Military officer; born in Newberry district, S. C., Dec. 12, 1814; graduated at the United States Military Academy in 1836; promoted first lieutenant in November, 1839; served during a part of the war with Mexico as additional paymaster; resigned in April, 1847, owing to failing health.
He published A critical history of the Mexican War.
He died in Beech Island, S. C., Jan. 23, 1876.
