Webster's speech of March 7 was received by Northern members of Congress with general disapproval, Boston Atlas, March 9, 13, 14, 1850; Courier, March 11. and by the people of Massachusetts with surprise and indignation. His biographer, G. T. Curtis, admits this adverse opinion, vol. II. p. 410.
