--The sales of real estate in the city during the following years foot up as follows: In 1859 to $518,347; in 1860 to $540,816; in 1861 to $124,780; in 1862 to $2,279,415. The falling off in 1861 is explained by a state of active hostilities, and the increase last year by a redundant amount of money.

In a letter addressed to Bradley V. Johnson, Esq. of Maryland, during the Presidential campaign of 1860, by Major Griswold, of this city, then a member of the Breckinridge electoral ticket of Maryland, the following interesting statistics are furnished of the relative contributions of North and South in acquiring that territorial domain from which the North afterwards sought to exclude the South.
"In this crisis," asks Major Griswold, "whose arms and efforts achieved these wonderful campaigns in Mexico, and extended the area of our territory to the Pacific!
