He was elected member of the State legislature in 1853, and, two years later, was chosen to the State senate. During 1846 and 1848 he was captain of a picked company of Texas Rangers, serving in the war with Mexico, and rendered dashing and valuable service in many important engagements and skirmishes. Subsequently he held the office of United States marshal. On April 15, 1861, he was commissioned colonel of the First regiment of Texas mounted riflemen.
