From Petersburg.[special correspondence of the Dispatch.] Petersburg, April 24, 1861. Our city, which has been comparatively quiet for a couple of days, was enlivened today by the arrival of the South Carolina troops on their way North. They marched through the principal streets leading from one depot to the other, halting at the Bolling brook Hotel. On their arrival at the depot they were publicly welcomed by W. T. Joynes, Esq., in a patriotic address, to which Gen. Benham, the Commander, made a spirited response. The greatest enthusiasm prevailed during their transit through the city.--Flags innumerable were suspended across the streets and flying from the principal buildings, and ladies from the windows waved their kerchiefs and lent their approving smiles. The regiment numbers about 600 men. Their exposure to the sun for several mouths while in camp at home had bronzed their faces, and they were covered with the dust of the railroad; but they were a fine looking body
From Suffolk.[special correspondence of the Dispatch.] Suffolk, Va., April 24, 1861. Everything is moving here. Volunteer companies spring into existence as if by magic.--The "Marion Rangers," Capt. R. O. White-head, (graduate of V. M. I.;) the "Suffolk Cavalry," Capt. Lee; "Chuckatuck Guards, " Capt. Phillips, (V. M. I;) "Nansemond Artillery," Capt. Ames, and a Light Infantry company, Capt. J. K. Kilby, M. D., in the Lower Parish, have all suddenly sprung into being, and are intensely eager for the fray. --Besides these, the ranks of the "Suffolk Continental, " and those of the "Home Guard," have been largely increased. Fortifications are being thrown up at Town Point, Bleak House Point, and Barrett's Neck, for the defence of the mouth of the Nansemond river and Chuckatuck creek, and a plenty of the best guns can be had from the Navy-Yard to make them more than efficient. We are glad to hear that the Convention has vacated all the old military commissions.--We wa
From Portsmouth.[correspondence of the Richmond Dispatch.] Portsmouth, April 24, 1861. We have been busily engaged since Sunday morning preparing batteries at the Hospital and Craney Island. The former is nearly completed. Several Dahlgren guns are already mounted. The old ship United States was towed down to the buoy off the mouth of the Western Branch, but has been brought back for the purpose, as I learn, of putting guns on board of her. Everything is moving forward with celerity, and very soon our state of defence will be unite complete. Now we have no fears of a successful attack — indeed, it may be well supposed that, for the present, nothing of the kind is designed. Yesterday three fine volunteer companies from Georgia arrived here. They are a noble looking set of men. Some intercourse I have had with a good number of them has impressed me with their high-toned and gentlemanly character. In one of the companies is a gentleman sixty-five years of age. He is
