On April 29, 1862, the company was detached from the 41st Regiment of Virginia Infantry, and ordered to report to Lieutenant-Colonel Archer, at Boykin's, near Smithfield, and guard the Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad. There it remained until May 27, 1862. May 27, 1862, it was ordered to report to Major Jones' Battery, No. 3, near Richmond, Va., as a reserve to sustain our forces in the event of need at the battle of Seven Pines, &c. Gen. Anderson, of Tennessee. Brigade Headquarters,Third Brigade Tennessee Volunteers. May 27th, 1862. At a meeting of the officers of this Brigade, at Brigade Headquarters, on motion of Lieut. Col. Howard, Brig. Gen. R. Hatton was called to the Chair, and Captain Hickman Johnson was appointed Secretary. The object of the meeting was announced to be the adoption of appropriate resolutions concerning the recent resignation of General Samuel R. Anderson, of Tennessee, as Brigadier of this command: Whereupon the following were presented by Colonel Peter Turney, and unanimously approved: Whereas, Brig.-Gen. Samuel R. Anderson, impelled by failing strength, and continued physical exhaustion, consequent upon an arduous campaign of more than eight months in Northwestern Virginia, and more recently on the Peninsula, has separated himself from as through a formal resignation of his commission: Therefore, be it. Resolved, That in this separation we are much pained, and i
y soon now, and it will probably be a hard one. If the rebels make up their minds to fight us here at Richmond, they will do their best, and there is no use or sense in saying or denying that they can fight. They are Americans as well as ourselves, and Americans are not cowards. The coming battle will probably decide the war if we are successful; but if they whip us, the war will last no one knows how long." Extracts from another journal have the following items, viz: "Tuesday, May 27, 1862.--We are only seven miles from Richmond, and as the rebels have their railroad in operation, they can at any moment send a large force against us. The report is, however, that they have retreated to within two miles of Richmond. It is not known when McClellan will attack them.--We have a very large force of artillery with us, and have no idea of retreating one step back. Our men are all anxious to advance, and don't mean to have any more 'Bull Run' fights. Richmond must and will be
