by Florida. At Shiloh this battery was attached to the brigade of General Gladden. At the battle of Murfreesboro he was distinguished, particularly on the occasion of the charge of Major-General Breckinridge's division, in command of ten 12-pound Napoleon guns. General Bragg alluded to him as an able and accomplished artillery officer. General Polk, also, in his report compliments Captain Robertson for vigilance and fearlessness in exposing himself in the discharge of his duties. On July 1, 1863, his efficiency and valor were rewarded by the commission of major of artillery. In this rank he commanded a battalion of artillery composed of the batteries of Barret, Havis, Lumsden and Massenburg, attached to Longstreet's command, at the battle of Chickamauga. In January, 1864, he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel of artillery, and assigned to the command of the artillery of Wheeler's cavalry corps, army of Tennessee, with which he served during the Atlanta campaign.
