litary Affairs. 1864. June 13th, Twelve thousand five hundred dollars were appropriated for the payment of bounties to volunteers in the United-States service, on account of the city of Salem. July 25th, Ordered, that the sum of twenty thousand dollars be, and hereby is, appropriated to the relief of families of volunteers. Twenty thousand dollars were also appropriated for the payment of bounties to volunteers, to fill the quota of Salem under the recent call of the President dated July 18, 1864; the money to be expended under the direction of the Committee on Military Affairs. December 16th, Twenty-five thousand dollars additional were appropriated for the same purpose, with the restriction that the bounty to each volunteer should not exceed one hundred and twenty-five dollars. Salem furnished twenty-seven hundred and eighty-nine men for the war, which was a surplus of one hundred and forty-eight over and above all demands. One hundred and fifty-eight were commissioned off

But Greeley did not comprehend this, and simply reported to Lincoln the reply he had received, and asked for further instructions. Lincoln's patience was not even then exhausted. action at Chancellorsville May 3, 1863, and was engaged at Gettysburg July 2 (when Colonel Revere was mortally wounded), and took part again during Pickett's charge on the afternoon of July 3. While in winter quarters, at Stevensburg, Va, 173 members of the regiment enlisted for another term of service. As part of the 2d Corps, the regiment shared in the engagements at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna and Cold Harbor, engaging in the assault of Petersburg and in the siege. On July 18, 1864, those whose term of service bad expired returned to Massachusetts and were mustered out. About 200 men were added to the regiment from the 15th Mass. Infantry, and it continued in service in the trenches, under command of Major Patten. At Reams' Station, August 25, nearly all the members of the regiment were taken prisoners.
