The investigation of the difficulties between these two officers revealed facts which confirmed General Beauregard in this opinion. He therefore came to the conclusion that the sooner General Ripley was sent to the field the better it would be for the service. Hence, on the 27th, he forwarded the following telegram to President Davis, who was then at General Hood's headquarters: Charleston, S. C., Sept. 27th, 1864. To President Jeff. Davis, General Hood's Headquarters, Ga.: Matters here are very unsatisfactory, requiring prompt action on the part of Government.
