nd gave the Confederates time to strengthen their forces in that direction, especially along the line of the great railway. Burbridge remained several weeks in Kentucky after his expulsion of Morgan, reorganizing and remounting his worn army, and then, late in September, he started with a fresh column directly for the salt works of the Confederates, near Abingdon, in Washington County, Virginia, to destroy them. He left one corps to guard the city and the railroad bridge across the river, and telegraphed to Grant he would attack me if I struck his road south of the Etowah. I received at this juncture a copy of the following order from President Davis: Augusta, Georgia, October 2d, 1864. General G. T. Beauregard, Augusta, Georgia. General:--I desire that, with as little delay as practicable, you will assume command of the military departments now commanded respectively by General Hood, and Lieutenant General Taylor. You will establish the headquarters of the department under your command at such point within its territorial limits as you may consider most advantageous to the public service. Your personal presence is expected wherever in your judgment the in

my neighborhood. This going from Beverly to battle is quite a sharp contrast. Our advantage was signal and important if we have good luck in holding on, which I think we shall. There may be fighting to-morrow, but I incline to think not. October 2, 1864 . . . The Washington boat was much in the style of the other — rather worse and more crowded, people and freight similar. There were more Christian Commissioners, who were joined by those who had come with me. The funniest people you even the line of battle! A pretty little fight, said he gingerly, a pretty little fight. He! he! he! Poor Potter! it wasn't his fault. Our extreme advance was driven back, but the day was a great success, with important strategic bearing. October 2, 1864 Taking up the narrative of the events of this day. The letter was written on the 6th. Abou Ben Butler had quite a stampede last night. Having got so far away from home, he conceived that the whole southern host was massed to crush him,
