It was his sad duty to escort the body of General Dunovant to his home at Chester, S. C. The service of Mr. Brooks in Virginia comprised the battles of Trevilian Station, White House, Stony Creek Church, Lee's Mill, Gravelly Run, Reams' Station, Black Snake or Vaughn Road, and the famous cattle expedition of General Butler in the vicinity of City Point. From February 16, 1865, until near the close of hostilities he was in the campaign against Sherman, of which the most important engagements were the fight with Kilpatrick, March 10, 1865, and the battle of Averasboro. Throughout this career he escaped without serious injury, only being hit by a spent ball at Trevilian's. Receiving a Mexican dollar as his share of the money available to pay the troops at Greensboro, he returned to his father's plantation. For five years from the fall of 1866 he was engaged
