There is no doubt that Stanton had said to Sumner and to others, among then Mr. Hooper and Horace White, just what the senator stated he had said; Sumner had a year before his speech freely mentioned in conversation and correspondence Stanton's communication to him. Stanton's statement to Horace White may be found in Senate debate, June 6, 1872 (Congressional Globe, p. 4283).
