estern was formerly master mate on the steam sloop of-war Hartford, Finding the gunners nearly all killed and wounded and the guns dismounted, and unable to return fire any longer, he was obliged to yield to superior numbers and with a heavy heart and mournful tone he ordered the colors to be lowered. After having surrendered, the Diana received eight or nine shots. The engagement lasted two hours and thirty minutes. Great praise is due the officers and privates of both companies and H. Lieut. Allen, of Gen Wetzel's staff fought bravely and well.--He is among the wounded. The enemy numbered from twelve to fifteen hundred. The gunboat Calhoun, as soon as she heard the firing left her moorings at Brasheer to go to the Diana's assistance; but she got aground, and ammunition, anchors chains and provisions were all thrown overboard to lighten her. Among the killed are Sergeant Major C. Sherman, J. C. Doiver, Acting 2d Lieutenant, Lieut. Francis, 12th Connecticut, and Lieut. J. McNelly.
Morgan, slave of A. Allen, of Petersburg. Va., has been sentenced to be hung on the 22d of May, for firing the 1st North Carolina Hospital, in that city. A few days ago the Court House at Shelbyville, Tenn., was consumed by fire. All the records of the county were lost. The Yankee "strong man," Dr. Winship has progressed so far that he can now lift 2,500 pounds. He intends to keep on till he gets to 3,000.
