The amount of money raised and expended by the town for the payment of State aid to the families of soldiers during the war, and which was afterwards repaid by the Commonwealth, was as follows: In 1861, $1,308.59; in 1862, $8,462.17; in 1863, $12,013.32; in 1864, $10,800.00; in 1865, $8,500.00. This society sent forward to the army clothing and hospital supplies, the money value of which, without counting the labor expended by the ladies, was more than five thousand dollars. At the close of the war the society had a cash balance on hand of fourteen hundred dollars, which was placed in charge of trustees, for the erection of a soldiers' monument, or memorial hall, whenever the citizens of the town shall be ready for such a work.
