York, charged with the murder of her husband by poison, and who has been twice sentenced to death, was to-day released from confinement by Judge Wright, of the Supreme Court, on proceedings brought before him by her counsel. Secretary Chase said, in response to a toast at a dinner given by the Union Club of New York, that the blackest negro in South Carolina, though black as midnight, was, in his eyes, whiter than the whitest rebel. [Vehemently cheered by the company, among whom was Wm. B. Astor.] It was reported at Washington on the 12th, on the authority of a private letter from New Mexico, that the strong forces which have been sent against the Texans in the Mesilla Valley have driven them far back into Texas. Geo. Wilkes, of Wilkes's Spirit of the Times, was accidently shot in the thigh by a pistol which he was handling. The wound, although not a dangerous one, will confine him to his room for some weeks. The Governor of Michigan has called an extra session of
