ies, and to send one section of Thornton's battery to the vicinity of the New Bridge, on the Nine-Mile road, and at the same time ordered the forces of Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Howard, commanding Second Division, Inner Line, and of Lieutenant-Colonel J. W. Atkinson, commanding First Division, Inner Line, to be at the intersection of the Brooke turnpike, and Intermediate Line by daylight Tuesday morning. Lieutenant-Colonel Howard being ordered at the same time to double his guards, posted at thand his skirmishers advanced under cover of ditches and the neighboring houses to within two hundred (200) yards of our works, and annoyed our artillerists so much that, at the suggestion of Lieutenant-Colonel Howard, I ordered him and Lieutenant-Colonel Atkinson to detach a portion of their commands and drive them from their shelter. Burglary. --A negro fellow named Peter, slave to John Blackwell, was arrested and caged yesterday evening, on the charge of breaking into the carpenter shop of Mr. J. W. Atkinson. The warrant did not state what Peter did after he broke in, though our knowledge of human instinct leads us to believe he found something lying round loose and laid violent hands on it. If he did, he will be a blue Peter this morning, after hearing the judgement of his Honor in the premises.
Police cases. --The Mayor, yesterday, ordered Peter, slave of John Blackwell, a whipping for breaking into J. W. Atkinson's carpenter shop, with intent to steal.--Erasmus Chase, arrested as a suspicious person and spy, was sent to jail.Lieut. Ashby, of the Hazlewood Volunteers, Culpeper county, Va., brought Chase to this city on Wednesday. He was arrested at Centreville last week, on the supposition that he was a Northern spy. When he first arrived here the prisoner was taken to the Governor's house. but His Excellency being absent, he was carried before the Mayor, who sent him to the police station for safekeeping. The prisoner, Chase, represents himself as being the captain of a vessel.--Michael Burns was held to bail to appear before Court and abide an investigation relative to a charge of unlawful paternity preferred against him by Bridget Starkie. alias McAleer.
Look out--$5 reward --For the sale delivery to my office of a Negro Boy, named George the property of Mrs. F. G. Skinner, of Culpeper county Va., The said Negro is about 18 or 20 years old, and near 5½ feet high, stout built, yellow complexion, bushy hair; has a lazy look, and speaks stow-- George was hired last year in Petersburg, to a tobacconist; this year he was hired to J. W. Atkinson, Esq., of this city. The said Boy was shipped, about three or four weeks ago, on the Central Railroad cars to Culpeper Court House, to wait on Major Skinner.--He was put on the cars with the servants that accompanied Col. Kershaw's or Gregg's regiment Since that time he has not been seen or heard of. He had in his possession a free passport, which was left for him by Major Skinner; go to the Court-House. Any information concerning him will be thankfully received; and if apprehended and brought safe to my office, I will pay the above reward of Five Dollars. He may be lurking in the city o
Ciga. --Arthur C. Douglas, of Rodgers's cavalry, was rearrested yesterday by the city police to answer the charge of stalling a horse from Major J. W. Atkinson. He was arrested once before and discharged because of the non-appearance of witnesses.
Court proceedings. Mayor's Court, Saturday, Feb. 23. --Arthur C. Douglas, Lieutenant in Rodgera's cavalry company arrested by officers Perrin and Bibb for stealing a $300 horse from Maj. J. W. Atkinson, was examined and sent before the Hustings Court. Lawrence Spain, arrested by officer Crone for breaking up a lot of furniture owned by Mrs. Enright, behaving disorderly and resisting the officers, was required to give security for his good behavior. Frederick Deitrick and August Holem, arrested by policemen Carter and Bibb as suspicious characters, without visible means of support, were committed to jail for further examination. John A. Clerke, arrested by officer Baptist for assaulting and attempting to rob Lewis Cohen, was committed to jail for further examination. Henderson, slave of Wm. Episcopal Diocesan Council. --The fact that the Council of the Diocese of Virginia met at St. Paul's Church, in this city, on the 20th inst., has already been made known to our readers, and we present below a sketch of the proceedings: The Council was called to order by the Bishop, Right Rev. John Johns, D. D. Rev. Geo. Woodbridge presented the resignation of Col. J. W. Atkinson as Secretary of the Council, which was accepted. On motion of Rev. D. F. Sprigg, Rev. T. G. Dashiell was elected Secretary. On motion of Rev. Mr. Mason. Rev. J. D. Powell was elected Assistant Secretary. On motion of Mr. Sprigg, Mr. S. P. Mitchell was elected Assistant Treasurer. Rev. John Grammer presented the report of the Managers of the Widows' and Orphans' Fund, showing the income of the Society for the first year to be $2,555.86, expenses of the same, $320; the permanent fund amounts to $40,221.16.
