Mrs. Lucy D. Barnes, of Charlotte county, Va., now 87 years old, has recently knit a lot of most excellent and comfortable socks and comforts, and sent them to the "Charlotte Defenders," of the 56th Regiment of Virginia Volunteers, and commanded by Captain Thos. D. Jeffress.
When an old lady, tottering with the infirmities of age gives such substantial encouragement, and evinces such interest and confidence in the "volunteers," is there a man, imbued with the ardor and valor of a Southron, who would hesitate to rush to the rescue of his country, and assist in repelling a fanatical invader, who seeks to deprive us of a heritage won by the blood and bravery of our ancestors?
