arge quantity of powder was stored. For a while it seemed that the magazine was in great danger from the burning mass and from our own gun, which we expected momentarily would be fired by the heat. As I have already said, it was next to impossible for anything to live at any point upon which the fire of the enemy was concentrated. The extinguishing of the flames was, therefore, a work of difficulty and great danger, It was, however, done in time to prevent any greater calamity. Private J. T. Barrineau, of the Wee Nees (Company C), distinguishing himself in his fearless and successful efforts to put out the fire. He was the first to reach the ruins and go to work in this hell of fire. Others, inspired by his example, went to his assistance. The other gun, which Gilmore and Dahlgren seemed determined should stand no longer, was on the sea face, south of the bomb proof headquarters.
