ccurred recently in that city! A day or two since a man named James Wena went to the Recorder's office of the Second District and made affidavit against Mr. A. Barthelemy, charging him with retaining unlawfully in his custody a half breed Sioux Indian girl, aged about 14 years, of whom he (Wenz) was the legal guardian and protector, having been appointed such some years ago by the Supreme Court of the State of Minnesota. From the affidavit, it further appeared that Barthelemy had hired the girl from affiant, agreeing to pay a certain amount per month for her services, but when the wages were due had refused either to pay or give up the girl. BarBarthelemy answered by filing an affidavit made by Sophie Cournoyer, the girl in question, who states first, that she is over 15 years old, and consequently of the age which, according to the laws of Minnesota, minors are emancipated, consequently Wenz has no claim upon her liberty or earnings.
