When General Grant landed south of Vicksburg, among the first to oppose him were the Arkansans of Green's brigade, who fought nobly at the battle of Port Gibson, May 1, 1863. Capt. Griff Bayne was mentioned as preeminently gallant, falling severely wounded after he and his sharpshooters had contested the enemy's advance from midnight to 8 a. m.
