The New York Herald is greatly distressed that three or four Confederate privateers should contrive to escape the clutches of the United States navy, consisting of three or four hundred hips of war, and continue unchecked their devastations of Yankee commerce. It may console itself by reflecting that the thing might be a great deal worse. In stand of three or four Confederate privateers, there might have been as there ought, a hundred a number sufficient to have swept Yankee commerce from the face of the ocean. Let Bennet, therefore, adopt the philosophy of the Dutchman who broke his leg and thanked Heaven it was not his neck.
