Birney, James Gillespie, 1792-1864
Statesman born in Danville, Ky., Feb. 4, 1792; graduated at the College of New Jersey in 1812; studied law with A. J. Dallas, of Philadelphia and began its practice in Kentucky in 1814.
He was a member of the State legislature at the age of twenty-two; became a planter in Alabama; served in the Alabama legislature; and practised law in Huntsville.
Returning to Kentucky in 1834, he emancipated his slaves, and proposed to print there an anti-slavery pape in 1840, and took part in the anti-slavery movements there.
In 1844 he was the candidate of the liberty party (q. v.) for the Presidency, the result of which was not only his own defeat, but that of Henry Clay, the candidate of the Whig party for the same office.
Mr. Birney was the father of the meritorious (Gen. David Bell Birney, who did excellent service for the Union in the Civil War, and died in Philadelphia, Pa., Oct. 18. 1864.
James (G. Birney died in Perth Amboy, N. J., Nov. 25, 1857.

Morris, Thomas 1776-1844
Jurist; born in Augusta county, Va., Jan. 3, 1776; removed to Ohio in 1795; admitted to the bar of Ohio in 1804; was a member of the legislature in 1806-30; elected judge of the Supreme Court of the State in 1830; and United States Senator in 1832.
In 1844 the Liberal party nominated him for Vice-President on the ticket with James G. Birney.
He died in Bethel, O., Dec. 7, 1844.

Tazewell, Littleton Waller 1774-1860
Legislator; born in Williamsburg, Va., Dec. 17, 1774; graduated at William and Mary College in 1792; admitted to the bar in 1796; member of Congress in 1800-2; member of the commission to treat with Spain for the purchase of Florida in 1819; member of the United States Senate in 1824-33; and was chosen governor of Virginia in 1834.
In 1840 he was the candidate for the Vice-Presidency on the ticket with James G. Birney.
He died in Norfolk, Va., March 6, 1860.
