Burglary. --A negro fellow named Peter, slave to John Blackwell, was arrested and caged yesterday evening, on the charge of breaking into the carpenter shop of Mr. J. W. Atkinson. The warrant did not state what Peter did after he broke in, though our knowledge of human instinct leads us to believe he found something lying round loose and laid violent hands on it. If he did, he will be a blue Peter this morning, after hearing the judgement of his Honor in the premises.
Police cases. --The Mayor, yesterday, ordered Peter, slave of John Blackwell, a whipping for breaking into J. W. Atkinson's carpenter shop, with intent to steal.--Erasmus Chase, arrested as a suspicious person and spy, was sent to jail.Lieut. Ashby, of the Hazlewood Volunteers, Culpeper county, Va., brought Chase to this city on Wednesday. He was arrested at Centreville last week, on the supposition that he was a Northern spy. When he first arrived here the prisoner was taken to the Governor's house. but His Excellency being absent, he was carried before the Mayor, who sent him to the police station for safekeeping. The prisoner, Chase, represents himself as being the captain of a vessel.--Michael Burns was held to bail to appear before Court and abide an investigation relative to a charge of unlawful paternity preferred against him by Bridget Starkie. alias McAleer.
urton Timberlake and Regnault. The petition of Digges & Booth, to keep an ordinary, was heard and granted. The application of Henry Banks (a negro emancipated by Bacon Tait) to remain in the State, being heard before a full bench, was granted. Ordered that he be registered in the office of the Court. Elijah, slave of Stephen Hunter, was tried for breaking into James H. Beagleston's store, on Dock street, on the night of the 25th of March last, and stealing a large lot of groceries, convicted and sentenced to receive thirty-nine lashes, well laid on. Flemming Morgan was held for fighting with James Harwood in the street, and fined $5 and costs of Court; which he paid. John Blackwell was tried for permitting his slave to go at large, and declared not guilty whereupon the same was discharged from custody. David W. Hughes, indicted for misdemeanor, give $300 bail for his appearance at the next term, and was discharged. The Court adjourned for the term.
