out the war; Samuel Hunt served as a private in Company A, Fourth South Carolina infantry, until he was seriously wounded at Will's Valley; Thomas Jefferson, at the age of sixteen, enlisted as a private in Company E, Second South Carolina Rifles, and was promoted to sergeant. At the battle of Second Manassas, he was shot through both thighs and at the Wilderness had an arm broken. In each instance, on recovery, he returned to duty, serving faithfully to the surrender at Appomattox. Capt. John H. Bowen, of the Hampton Legion, was captured at Will's Valley and held one year as a prisoner. The father and mother who had been called upon to give five sons to the cause of the South were so fortunate as to see them all come home safely at the end of the struggle. The father died June 4, 1871, and the mother survives. The family was of Revolutionary stock; and the father's grand-uncle, Reese Bowen, was killed at the battle of King's Mountain. Col. Robert E.
