ictim to San Francisco, in company with his wife's brother, who is the somewhat noted Judge Hardy. Newell was stabbed several times by Smith, so that he died in a few minutes without making resistance. Smith was formerly Mayor of Sacramento. He has given himself up to the authorities and is now in jail. Another tragic affair occurred in Sacramento on the same day. A person named Wm. Diernay, who had just returned from the Washoe mines, became suspicious that one John H. Cassiday had seduced his wife during his absence, and at once armed himself to kill her supposed seducer. Meeting Cassiday in the street, he commenced firing at him. The first shot hit Dr. J. R. Boyce, an old and highly respected citizen, inflicting a wound which will probably prove fatal. Diernay continued to fire upon Cassiday, who retreated and escaped unhurt, after being chased a distance of three blocks and being repeatedly fired at by his infuriated assailant. Diernay was arrested and lodged in jail.
