doubtedly the tallest men in the room. But the especial characteristic of Tourgueneff was a winning sweetness of manner, which surpassed even Longfellow's, and impressed one as being kind nature's, to adopt Tennyson's distinction, and not merely those next to best manners which the poet attributes to the great. Tourgueneff greeted us heartily as Americans,--Mr. Bishop also forming one of the group,--and spoke warmly of those of our compatriots whom he had known, as Emma Lazarus and Professor Boyesen. He seemed much gratified when I told him that the types of reformers in his latest book, Virgin Soil, -which may be read to more advantage in its French form as Terres Vierges, --appeared to me universal, not local, and that I was constantly reminded by them of men and women whom I had known in America.
