In political affairs he has also played a conspicuous part, representing Colleton county in the legislature in 1876-77, and again in 1880-81, and rendering important service toward the election of Governor Hampton. William Augustus Black William Augustus Black was clerking in the freight office of the South Carolina railway at Columbia when the war commenced. He enlisted in June, 1861, as a private in the Boykin Rangers, commanded by A. H. Boykin, of Camden, S. C. The company acted as couriers and escort for Gen. M. L. Bonham several months and was then attached to Radford's regiment of Virginia cavalry. They remained with this regiment but a short time and were then attached to the Jeff Davis legion, being known as Company G of that organization, in which they served throughout the Peninsular campaign.
