, with cavalry and artillery, attempted to cross White Oak river, in Onslow county, N. C. They were met by 125 of our cavalry, commanded by Capt. E. D. Ward. The Wilmington Journal says: The fight lasted about three hours, when Captain Ward fell back a short distance out of the range of their artillery. They continued to shell the woods until near dark, when they fell back. In the engagement we had one man, Sergeant Williams, of the Gatlin Dragoons, wounded in both legs, and one horse wounded by the bursting of a shell. Captain Ward learns from citizens along the line of the enemy's retreat, that we killed two dead on the spot, wounded eleven badly, and several more slightly.--Among those badly was their Colonel, who was shot from his horse. They curse our "two-barrelled cavalry," and say they want shot guns, too. They fell back about seven miles, to Mrs. Bryan's, where they met more of their men. They were there on the 28th, 1,500 strong, among them five hundred cavalry.
Maryland Volunteers --Companies composed of natives of Maryland have lately been formed in this city under the following commanders Capt. John W. Torseh, Wm. H. Murray, Wm C. Crane, J. R. Herbert, Geo. H. Emack P Bryan,--McAber, and — Smith. All of them number the requisite amount of men — in a word, were full companies. The commands of Emack Smith, Murray, and Crane, have started to join Jackson, and the others are read

In these tolls they were cheered and assisted by the crew of the ship, who, with the zeal and skill of American seamen, gave themselves no respite all night long Hundreds of tons of coal, baggage, and commissary stores, were in this way consigned to the deep and lost. The trunks, chests, camp equipage, etc., of the officers went first, and among them everything Col. Bryan and his staff had on board. Cheerfulness, alacrity, and courage distinguished every man in the arduous labors of a night gloomy and threatening to all. Morning came at last, and about seven o'clock two more schooners bore up for the steamer, and took off five hundred more of the troops. The transfer was difficult and dangerous in the extreme. Each man had to be lowered into the boats along side by ropes, and then as each boat was filled, the living freight was conveyed to the smalle
