Cabot, George 1751-1823
Statesman; born in Salem, Mass., Dec. 3, 1751; educated at Harvard College; member of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress; also of the State convention which accepted the national Constitution; was a United States Senator in 1791-96; and became the first Secretary of the Navy in 1798.
He died in Boston, Mass., April 18, 1823.
Cape Breton
A large island at the entrance of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and separated from Nova Scotia by the narrow strait of Canso; discovered by Cabot, 1497.
The French fortress Louisburg (q. v.) was situated on this island.
This was taken by the New England troops in 1745.
Island ceded to England, Feb. 10, 1763; incorporated with Nova Scotia, 1819.
Population, 1891, 86,914.
