etter to my folks at home, telling them that I was alive at that date. I told him to fix it up as good as he could, so as not to cause mother more sorrow than was actually necessary. The whole prison was crowded around the gate; and as the names were called by a loud-voiced rebel, some countenance would light up with joy as he answered, Here! and you would see him struggle through the crowd to the gate and disappear through the wicket. We three stood together, near the deadline. John Carey! called the reb. Here!-and he was through the wicket before I could look at him. Allen Spencer! Here! Cudge gave me his hand: Good-bye, Oats. Good-bye, Cudge, --and he slipped through the wicket and the door swung to. I staggered back through the crowd. They were gone! I had no farther interest in the gate or in the crowd. I was alone! My comrades had left me to die! Blinded by my tears, and sick through the intensity of my feelings, I reached our tent-my tent, now-and lay dow

ould rush to the rescue; with the terrible war-cry of Faugh-a-Ballagh they would sweep the foes of the Union before them, like chaff before the wind. On one occasion, having formed their line upon Lieutenant-Colonel Guiney and his two standard bearers, who advanced before them, the commander calling Men, follow your colors, they withstood nine successive charges of the enemy. Eleven officers of the 9th fell in that battle, including Capts. William Madigan, James E. McCafferty of Boston, John Carey of Marlborough, Jeremiah O'Neil of Medford, with Lieuts. R. P. Nugent of Boston and Francis O'Dowd of Medford. The 22d lost its colonel, Jesse A. Gove,—the first of the Massachusetts colonels to fall,—with Capt. J. F. Dunning of Boston and Lieut. T. F. Salter of Haverhill of the 22d and Lieut. C. C. E. Mortimer of the 3d Battery. Every regiment suffered, but the 22d Massachusetts most of all. Mayor's Court. --There was little business before this Court yesterday. Sam, slave of John Carey, was charged with having twelve grain bags supposed to have been stolen. The negro was discharged, the bags being all right. Henry Westford, charged with stealing a saddle, bridle, and pair of spurs from Martin Murphy, was sent on to the Hustings Court. It was proved that Murphy had left the saddle, etc., at a woman's house in Screamersville, and Westford knowing the fact sent a negro for the saddle in Murphy's name, and sold it to Mr. Joseph H. Colquitt for $65. R. G. Smithers was fined $3 for driving his wagon across the pavement of Broad street. August B. Lipscomb was charged with receiving a large lot of horse shoes, stolen from Nance& Oliver. It appearing that the shoes had been stolen beyond the corporate limits, the case was sent to the county.
