Many off-hand speeches were made, and toasts and sentiments sparkling with good humor, wit and patriotism, were abundant. Among the speakers were C. H. Stevens, Esq., immortalized as the founder of the iron battery, and bravely manned by the Guard; Major Ellison Capers, Captain Cuthbert, and Wm. B. Carlisle, Esq. The mothers, wives, sisters and sweethearts of the Palmetto Guard, have contributed the sum of two hundred dollars for the purpose of presenting the company with a gold medal in commemoration of the memorable battle of Fort Sumter. The medal has been manufactured by Messrs. Spencer & Teague, where it may be seen to-day.
