The gallant dead. Among those who fell in the glorious action of the 21st October, near Leesburg, was Wm. E. Carroll, A. M., formerly the well known editor of the Birdstown Gazette, Nelson county, Kentucky. Mr. Carroll, in his lifetime, did great service in the cause of the South, and while occupying the professorial chair in the University never lost sight of our War for Independence. He patriotically entered the ranks as a private in the Hamer Rifles, 18th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers, and expired with a smile in the moment of victory. Though extremely young, his learning was vast, and his morals singularly pure. The entire editorial corps of Kentucky will hear of his untimely demise with sincere regret, as he was greatly beloved by all parties, whether friend or foe.
