Had they succeeded in this attempt, our force, by the enemy advancing in overwhelming numbers, would have been scattered to the four winds. The battles at and near Boonsboro, Funktown, and Antietam Creek, Tuesday morning, July seventh, the cavalry force moved back to Boonsboro, the enemy following closely the rearguard, and at intervals there was brisk skirmishing between General Buford's command and the enemy.
